How to Successfully Get a Japan Tourist Visa in Qatar? | Visa Guide for Filipinos

Japan has been one of every Filipino’s dream destinations. We wanted to go there for various reasons such as to see the cherry blossoms, taste the authentic Japanese cuisines, ski during the winter, experience Japan’s heritage and a whole lot more. But in order to make that “dream” of getting there a reality, the first step that every Philippine passport holders should do is to apply for a visa (apart from saving).

On this post, I am going to share with you my personal experience on applying for a Japan tourist visa here in Doha. Unlike in the Philippines, you will have to submit your requirements directly at the Embassy of Japan instead of going through an agency. Below are the steps that I took to successfully get that visa stamped on my passport.

I. Visit the Embassy of Japan in Qatar website to check out the requirements and other information.

Most of the information that you will need for your visa application such as the Embassy’s office hours, visa type, list of requirements and sample forms are available on their website, which you can visit through this link. Just one note though, you need to be a resident of Qatar in order to be eligible to apply here, as they don’t accept application from non-residents.

II. Gather all the necessary documents

Once you know the requirements that you need to submit based on your visa type, nationality and purpose of travel, you must now prepare and gather all the necessary documents. I applied for a tourist visa without a guarantor and here are the documents that I submitted:

1. Original Passport – more than 6 months validity and with at least 2 blank pages left.

2. 1 Passport Copy – particularly the information page.

3. Visa Application Form – click here to download. If you need some guidelines on filling up the form, you may visit this page provided by the Embassy. Make sure to answer everything, don’t leave anything blank. If some parts are not applicable to you, simply write “Not Applicable”or “N/A.”

Since I don’t have a guarantor, this is how I filled up the Guarantor and Inviter portion on the 2nd page of the form.

4. Photo – passport size with gray, blue or white background, and taken within 3 months

5. A letter from sponsor in Qatar – Not needed if your sponsor here in Qatar is the Company where you work, no. 6 below is already sufficient. But if your sponsor is your husband or parents, then you need to provide one. I am not sure though if this is still necessary if you will be traveling with them. This letter needs to state that your sponsor does not have any objection or issues with you traveling to Japan. It should also have details such as passport no., Qatar ID no. and the purpose of travel. Below is the letter that I submitted. My sponsor here in Qatar is my husband and sadly he can’t join me on this trip.

6. Employment Certificate – Should have details such as your Nationality, Passport No., Qatar ID No., your  position in the Company, joining date, salary, purpose of traveling to Japan, duration of travel and return guarantee to Qatar.

7. Copy of residence permit on passport and copy of Qatar ID (both sides)  should have atleast 3 months validity

8. Schedule of Stay in Japan – click this link for the format. If you don’t have a final itinerary yet, it is fine, as long as you indicate on the activity plan column the specific places or attractions that you wish to see and visit in Japan. See example below.

9. Hotel reservation for the period of stay – In my case, I submitted an airbnb reservation document that was booked by my sister from the Philippines who was with me on this trip. The Embassy required me to submit her Japan tourist visa just to be sure that she is eligible to travel with me. The accommodation document must also bear or show your name especially if you will be traveling with others.

You can also try to reserve through Booking.com, they have an option where you can cancel your reservation anytime before the check in date.

10. Copy of flight booking – Your Qatar to Japan flight booking, but if you will not be flying directly from Qatar, then you need to provide your other airline reservation. I submitted 2 flight bookings, my Qatar to Philippines flight with Cebu Pacific and my Philippines to Japan flight with China Airlines, since I stayed in Manila for a few days before going to Japan.

11. Bank Statement for the last 6 months  This must be authorized and stamped by the bank. Take note that they are very strict especially with the deposits and the balance. You may be required to submit additional documents if you have loans or they may ask you to provide explanation for some cash deposits on your bank. The balance should be consistent for the last six months (Don’t attempt to deposit a huge amount of money before submission just to make it look good) and sufficient enough to cover your whole stay in Japan (For the show money, I would suggest at least QAR 1,000 per day/per person, just to be on the safer side).

12. Copy of previous visas  this can be Japan, USA, Schengen or UK visa if you have any.

In case you have a guarantor who will pay some or all of your travel expenses, you need to provide additional documents such as Letter of Guarantee, Guarantor’s Passport Copy and Bank Statement.

III. Go to the Embassy of Japan for document submission

If you have already completed all the necessary documents, then it’s time for you to go to the Embassy. Visa application is from Sunday to Thursday, 7:30 am to 12:00pm (8:30am – 12:00pm during Ramadan). In case you are not available to submit the requirements (applicable also with passport collection), you can let somebody do it on your behalf.

Upon your arrival, the security personnel will check your bags and you will leave to them your ID and mobile phones. Afterwards, proceed to the Consular Section. Once inside, you can directly go to the embassy official’s window or wait for them to call you. Hand them over all the requirements then wait for around 10 to 15 minutes to know the result of their assessment. The embassy official may require you to give further documents or sometimes they will just ask you to explain some items on those you submitted. In case you cannot submit the additional documents that they requested from you, you can politely explain it to them and ask if you can submit an alternative instead.

If the documents you presented are complete, they will hand you over a receipt showing the date (usually after 3 working/business days) on when you can get your passport with the visa, as well as the amount of visa fee that you need to pay. Good news for us Filipinos, as our visa to Japan is entirely free.

IV. Collect your Passport and Visa at the Embassy

The timing of the passport collection is from 10:00am – 3:00pm (10:00am – 1:30pm during Ramadan) every Sunday to Thursday. Once you got it, check first all the information on the visa and make sure that everything is correct before you leave the embassy.

There you go guys, I hope this will help you. If you have further questions regarding the application, you may shoot a message below or you can contact the Embassy (see information below), as they will gladly assist you with your queries.

I guess that’s it, good luck, hope for the best, have fun and enjoy Japan.

      2. Hello Kish! Yes you can put your mom as your guarantor.. I think you need to make a guarantee letter din, I’ve provided a link above.. And you need to submit her passport copy and bank statements din. Is she your sponsor here in Qatar??

      3. Hi Maria! Would you know if a flight reservation can be considered as copy of flight booking (valid but it can be cancelled if visa is rejected)? can you recommend a travel agency in Qatar that issues that?

  1. Hello sir,
Please does anyone know overseas Japan Online immigration department email? My question is, if a Japan company employs you, do you have to pay any money for an online Japan immigration department for the documents to be sent to you to the embassy for your visa?

    1. Hello! Thank you for that question.. But I think I cannot answer that.. Just call the Embassy of Japan to give you proper information regarding that.. If you are residing in Qatar, I have included the contact info above..

  2. hi! there’s a question in the application form that asks your “ID no. issued by your government”, can I write my QID no. there? thanks 🙂

    1. Hello!! I think you should put there the IDs issued by the govt where you are a citizen.. If you are only a resident in Qatar, then I guess you cannot write your QID on that portion..

      2. Hello Loucelle! Yes, I am ok, hope you are doing fine as well. For the employment certificate, you need to address it to Japan Embassy and you need to state the purpose (e.g. travel).. Usually, employers here in Qatar already know what information are needed on the employment certificate.. They even have templates for that.. Let me know if you need a sample, I can email you one..

  4. Hi Ms. MI!

Hope all is well. Ask ko lang po if it is possible na Philippine bank statement ang ipasa ko or it should be coming from my bank here in Qatar?

    Thank you 😊

    1. Hello Maggie!! I think you should submit both bank statements, if ever.. For the QA bank statements, they are checking the salary that goes into your bank every month.. Now, if most of your funds is in your bank in the Philippines, you can submit it, but the bank statements should be original and stamped or signed by the bank, meaning somebody from PH should send it to you here.. I hope this answers your question.. 😊

  5. Hi Maria,

Does the Qatar Id have to be 3 month valid from the day your applying for the visa or 3 months valid from the date of your travel. Eg : My Qatar id is expiring on 21/06/2018 and i want to travel on the 2nd of April 2018. But i will apply for the visa on the 1st of March . Is it ok.

    1. There’s no clarity regarding that, but based on my interpretation, it should be 3 months from the day you are applying for the visa.. Just to be on the safer side, I suggest you to call them.. You may check the contact information above.. Thank you..

    1. Hello Chloe!! I think that is fine, atleast they will see that you are really saving for your trip.. What I mean by consistency is that, you should not make a huge amount of deposit just to make your bank statement look good..

  8. Hi thanks for the detailed information! I want to ask, can I provide both my mom and dad’s bank statements and make them both my guarantor? I’m not a minor but I’m a student and my family is supporting my expenses. However, when I went to apply with my father’s bank statements which is stable and has more than enough balance to support my trip, they said it does not look good and thay I need additional bank statements if possible. So I’m wondering, would adding my mom as a guarantor and providing her bank statement work? Would really appreciate any information. Thanks!

First, just in case I got rejected in my first try, when is it possible for me to reapply again? Secondly, when is the best time to apply for a visa (e.g. 1 month prior to planned date of visiting Japan)?

    Thank you so much.

    1. Hello Rebecca! 1st Q: I’m not really sure when you can reapply incase you got rejected.. You may call the embassy to know more about this.. Check the contact details on the blog.. 2nd Q: I suggest applying atleast 2 or 3 months before your planned date to visit Japan, so you will have ample time if ever the embassy will require you submit further documents.. For now, don’t think about getting rejected.. Submit all the required documents, stay positive and pray.. 😊

If yes, and you think have ample time, like atleast 3 weeks, then you can all apply in the Philippines.. If not, let’s say you will go directly from Qatar to Japan, then I guess it is better for you to apply here.. Or you may ask your relatives in the Philippines to call an agency that assists in Japan tourist visa processing to give you more information regarding your situation..

I went yesterday to apply visa, officer required me to explain the credited amount sa bank statement ko which I can justify with proof, but he ask me also to provide statemen of my savings account in Philippines, are they looking for guarantee na may pera talaga ako to spend? Did they ask you same when you applied before? Should I apply it again after a month, but my flight is booked on 13April.

    1. Hello Jonas! They didn’t ask for my bank statements from PH.. You don’t need to wait for a month, I think your application is not rejected, they are just asking you to provide more documents.. Once it’s completed, you can go back to the Embassy.. And yes, they might be looking for some guarantee that you have money to spend once you’re in Japan.. Is it possible for you to get those bank statements from PH? If yes, call Japan embassy and ask them if they would need original and stamped copies or if you can just submit a statement printed online.. Let me know if you have more questions..

    1. Hello Kate! I think you can apply by May, just make sure that all your requirements are complete.. It is actually better that you have all of your savings on your bank account here in Qatar, as long as the money that you have there is enough to cover your intended stay in Japan.. Now, as to getting denied for the visa, I honestly don’t know what the visa officer is looking for.. But I guess, if you have all the requirements, then you have a higher chance of getting approved..

Even if you have enough money but your balance is not consistent for the past 6 mos, then they might see it as questionable..

Regarding the deposit, I didn’t say it is not allowed, rather avoid depositing a huge amount of money to make your bank statement balance look good.. If your trip wont be anytime soon, you can start saving every month on your payroll account.. Some says, you can present a printed online copy of you PH bank statement, if most of your savings are there.. I haven’t tried this though, to be sure, you may inquire directly from the embassy, I have provided a contact info above..

As for the guarantor, I think he can be, though I am not 100% sure about it.. You can call the embassy to inquire regarding this.. Anyway, he will have to give you a guarantee letter..

  27. Hi Ms. Ingrid, this post is very helpful; thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I also would like to ask if you have an idea if it is acceptable to submit a bank statement here in Qatar for 3 months only because I just opened the account last month, September and I am planning to apply and submit my requirements come December this year. (That would be a record from Sept-Nov.) Thanks in advance!

    1. Hello Nikita.. Thanks for finding this post helpful.. Regarding your question, on Japan Embassy’s list of requirements, they specified that the bank statement to be submitted should be atleast 6 mos.. So, I am not sure if they will accept a statement that is less than that.. Maybe you have other bank accounts that you can present aside from this one.. Or you may try to reach the embassy through the numbers above to ask more about this..

  28. Hello, Ms. Mi.

Thanks for sharing this post. I noticed you mentioned that applying directly is for residents only, please correct me if I’m wrong. “Just one note though, you need to be a resident of Qatar in order to be eligible to apply here, as they don’t accept application from non-residents.” – If yes, how should an OFW / non-residents apply?

Because we are planning for a Family trip and my sister who is an OFW in Qatar will most likely apply for a visa there.

    Thank you very much! 🙂

    1. Hello Paula.. When I say resident, what I mean is those who have a resident permit or Qatar ID here.. Those who are under tourist or family visa, may not be able to apply, as one of their requirements is the Qatar ID.. If your sister is an OFW here, then she can apply here..

      1. I see. I also read in Qatar embassy website is that before a working visa, a resident permit should be secured as well. Thank you for the quick response, Ms. Mi. 🙂

  29. Hi miss maria, I just want to say thank you for the informative post ( even though matagal mo na po syang blog). Ive been reading your blog again and again before I applied to make sure, and thankfully I got the visa 😊. I just want to share, maybe it can help the others, na I also got warned about the bank statement that I can get a high risk of rejection (I also have 10k plus budget) Yes they are a bit strict but I think I realized is, what they are looking for is the savings account, because what I submitted is the salary account. And if they’d ask for a bank statement in the Philippines, no problem po sa kanila na hindi official sa bank. pwede po iopen lang sa mobile, took a screen shot of my account and then sent it to them. After that they gave me a slip of reciept, kalas hehe. I hope this helps, para hindi po sana madiscourage yung iba na magapply 😊

    2. Hi Hazel, was it free? For the bank statement do you think a copy of the bank statement only (not original) from Philippines will do?

      Thank you.

    1. Hello Vanessa!! Are you a Filipino citizen? If yes, then it is for free whether single or multiple visa.. Plus, I know that it is upon the discretion of the visa officer if they will give you a multiple visa..

    2. Hi. If ever po na hihingan ka pa ng supporting documents like if may ibang bank accounts ka dito sa Doha or Pinas pero wala ka na mabibigay kasi yung payroll account lang yung meron ka. Ok lang po ba yun? Or there’s a bigger chance of getting denied?

      1. Hello Jilyana! Make sure that your payroll account has enough savings, because I don’t think that they will ask for other bank statements if they think that the money that you have is sufficient..

  33. Hello, first thank you sa helpful blog. Sa mga naghhanap ng tips share ko lang, I got warned din na risky un application because of bank account. I have less than 10k 😅 po pero i attached a cover letter na i will be receiving vacation pay and last salary amounting to 5k. But in the end they gave me visa 😍 today. I think plus points ang travel history ko ,been to 4 countries in the past two years with my bf. i applied with him also and we attached out r travel, pics together, tinanggap po nila un sa requiremnts,. Waiting pa kmi sa passpor nya inshala approved din sya. Kaya po sa mga desidido as much as possible magsave po tlg pra mabwasan ang kaba, qnd more travel more fun. Ty

  34. Hi, ask ko lang po is there any issue if my friend is working in Qatar for only 1 year and 5 months on the time we are planning to apply for a visa. Because i think in applying Korean visa they require that you are working in Qatar for 2 years or more. Thank you and a big help po yung blog mo 🙂
