Appreciating Art | Picasso and Giacometti in Qatar

Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success. – Pablo Picasso

Artistically I am still a child with a whole life ahead of me to discover and create. I want something, but I wont know what it is until I succeed in doing it. – Alberto Giacometti

These are some of the quotes from these two amazing artists that struck me. Pablo Picasso is a Spanish artist, regarded as one of the greatest and most influential until this time. I came to know his works when we visited his museum in Barcelona, two years ago. Alberto Giacometti, on the other hand, is new to my ear. He is a Swiss sculptor and painter whose impressive works are displayed in museums all over the world.

From 22 February to 21 May 2017, an exhibition featuring some of the famous works of these artists will be displayed at the Old Doha Fire Station in Qatar. Most of these are collections from the Musee National Picasso and the Fondation Giacometti in Paris.

I was able to go to this exhibit last weekend, as the place is very close to where I work. According to their website, every visit will be accompanied by a series of lectures and an extensive education programme, as well as a self-guided handbook for the visitors. However, these were not offered to me when I approached the reception area upon my arrival, instead, they directed me right away to the entrance of the gallery. This was not a problem though, as it was very easy to navigate through the exhibits and the place was not that big, so it is impossible to miss something. There were accommodating staffs as well to assist and answer your questions. Every collection has a label next to it that gives information on the artists, name of the exhibit and the date it was done.

The exhibition is divided into sections that shows the different aspects of the works of each artists, their influences, the connection or similarity on their works and more. The collection mainly consists of paintings, sculptures and some sketches. At the end of the gallery, there’s a small area where you can watch short videos about them.

The one in the middle is “The She Goat” by Picasso.

Spending at least an hour or two is already enough for you to see and appreciate all the exhibits. Recommended for families and friends, whether they are an art enthusiast or not.  After your visit, make sure to check out Cafe # 999, which you can find within the vicinity of the Old Fire Station. I’ve written a restaurant review about it that you can read on this link.
